La Garcinia mangostana, più comunemente conosciuta con il nome dimangostano, è un albero che può raggiungere i 25 metri e produce un bellissimo frutto tondeggiante dalla buccia di colore viola.
La raccolta dei frutti
Il frutto viene raccolto da luglio a settembre quando la maturazione è praticamente completa. Questo perché non matura dopo averlo colto e non può essere raccolto da terra perché successivamente alla sua caduta si avviano processi fermentativi che lo rendono inutilizzabile.
Dalla polpa, succosa e fresca, si ottiene un succo simile per consistenza e colore a quello della pera. Anche il sapore gli si avvicina ma è sicuramente meno dolce.
La parte bianca del frutto, dolce e gradevole, può essere anche consumata a spicchi come un mandarino, mentre la parte più scura nella quale è avvolta, più aspra e meno gradita ma ricchissima in principi attivi, può essere usata nei succhi prodotti con frutti dolci, così da mimetizzarne il gusto.
