Rimedi naturali contro l’insonnia: controindicazioni
Come combattere l’insonnia: altri consigli utili
Come mandorle, banane e cachi. No alcool, no caffè, no cioccolato e no bibite energizzanti.

(ENGLISH VERSION)
If we suffer from insomnia, we can use many natural remedies: in addition to paying attention to the foods we consume before going to bed, we can reconcile sleep with herbal teas, Bach flowers and essential oils as natural remedies for insomnia.
Insomnia causes
The causes of various insomnia are linked to situations of psycho-physical stress, emotional discomfort, depression, or hyperactivity and too much work. Even the change of season, especially towards the cold and dark months, as well as the transition from solar time to the legal and vice versa, represents a critical moment for those who have a “delicate” sleep.
There are three types of insomnia:
difficulty falling asleep (initial insomnia)
frequent and short-term nocturnal awakenings, or light sleep without rest, or stay awake in the middle of the night (central insomnia)
wake up early in the morning after sleeping a few hours (terminal insomnia)
The alteration of sleep may be periodic, transitory (maximum one week) or short-term (two-three weeks), or chronic (over three weeks), or even re-propose depending on the period you are going through and not you must never take it under your leg. That we can not fall asleep, or turn in the bed all night, or still wake up at dawn with a start, but without feeling sufficiently rested, all these are alarm bells of something wrong. Situations should not be underestimated, since they also negatively affect our daytime life, causing chronic fatigue and irritability, thus triggering a vicious circle that triggers other insomnia.
It is therefore necessary to bring our body-mind system back to a sleep-wake balance. Here Mother Nature once again helps us with a wide choice of natural remedies, including soothing plants and other sweet remedies, to make our nights quiet.
Insomnia natural remedies: beneficial herbs
In phytotherapy there are various plants with soothing and hypno-inducing properties that can help us to sleep and keep it for the duration of the whole night until the alarm rings. A valid natural alternative to drugs and sleeping pills. They are all herbs with which you can prepare a good night herbal tea.
The most well known plant is definitely the Chamomile (Camomilla matricaria), used since the dawn of time to put the children to sleep and calm the restless souls. Attention that over a certain concentration has the opposite effect.
Tiglio (Tilia tomentosa) has a mild sedative effect, relieves tension, calms nervousness and headaches, promoting sleep.
Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha) also has a sedative effect on the nervous system and also acts as an antispasmodic.
The Hypericum (Hypericum perforatum), known as St. John’s Wort, has calming and relaxing potential, as well as helping in cases of depression and anxiety.
Hops (Humulus lupulus) has a hypno-inducing effect and is also used to fill the cushions.
Sweet Orange (Citrus aurantium) has calming and antidepressant properties.
Also the Willow (Salix alba) has a calming effect.
Passiflora (Passiflora incarnata) acts on the central nervous system, calming the palpitations in case of anxiety and stress; helps you to get to sleep easily without having daytime sleepiness.
Melissa (Melissa officinalis) relieves various disorders of the nervous sphere, from headaches to exhaustion, from anxiety to insomnia.
Escolzia (Escholtzia californica) can also be a great help in inducing sleep, thanks to its analgesic and anxiolytic properties.
One of the most known natural remedies for insomnia is Valeriana (Valeriana officinalis), whose dried root is used. Considered a natural tranquilizer, it facilitates sleep, lowering the level of stress and limiting anxiety, attention that can give dependence and cause mental dullness during the day if dosed badly, contraindicated for those suffering from low pressure. All these herbs can be consumed in the form of infusions, or in pure or mixed herbal compounds, such as dry extract in capsules or mother tincture or hydroalcoholic maceration in drops.
Natural remedies for insomnia: contraindications
Medicinal plants are not without side effects. Before taking any herbal remedy, consider well the type of insomnia you suffer and choose the herbal mix taste, following the advice of an experienced herbalist, who can prepare the dosage ad hoc, or a naturopath or even contact a doctor who knows about herbal medicine. Avoid do-it-yourself care.
Essential oils and aromatherapy as natural remedies for sleeping
To make night-time relaxation easier, other effective natural remedies are essential olls based on soothing plants. to be added to the water of the essence diffuser or a few drops in a handkerchief or cotton swab to be placed under the pillow to reconcile sleep inebriating the sense of smell. Or to use for relaxing massages before bedtime or even add to the bath water for a moment of relaxation.
Lavender is the essence with the most used calming effect ever, with a fresh scent reminiscent of the flowering fields in Provance. The Verbena, then, acts on the tone of the mood, with anti-stress properties, facilitating the falling asleep.
Jasmine, with a sweet and warm smell, has a sedative effect that acts directly on the nervous system.
Bergamot, with its fresh and pungent scent, loosens the states of tension and repressed emotions.
The Maggiorana has a relaxing effect, especially in the presence of anxiety that prevents you from falling asleep.
Sandalwood, with a sweetish scent, calms the mind and inebriates the senses.
Finally, the Rose, with its sweet and fresh aroma at the same time, which positively affects relaxation.
How to fight insomnia: other useful tips
To promote sleep, in addition to herbal remedies, we can induce calm to our body through practical activities to be carried out in the evening. Disciplines like yoga (not the dynamic one though) and meditation (there are various techniques) favor relaxation and inner peace, so they are especially indicated in cases of anxiety and worries that lead to dark dreams and sleep disorders.
Exercising and sports such as swimming in the evening also help to tire the body, as well as producing endorphins and serotonin, predisposing us to rest at night. Our grandmothers, however, would tell us to relax with a nice hot bath, filling the tub full of boiling water even with scented salts or relaxing essences. A hot shower in the evening is fine too, to ease the stress accumulated during the day and to loosen up the numb muscles. The choice of the preferred shower gel is important to induce a well-deserved relaxation, since the sense of smell also plays its part. After the bath or after the shower, another advice is to do a self-massage, starting from the feet and proceeding upwards, on legs, stomach, shoulders and arms, with sweet almond oil combined with lavender essential oil (or another calming essence).
To reconcile sleep, it is good to avoid watching television until late in the evening, as well as being at the computer or watching the smartphone continuously. The blue light and the electromagnetic waves of these devices disturb the brain waves, altering sleep. This is also why it is advisable to avoid keeping your smartphone on the bedside table at night. As an alternative to staying in front of the TV until late, you can read a good book, which makes us travel with imagination and distracts us from everyday worries, or another great idea is to dedicate yourself to listening to relaxing music.
At the time of going to sleep, you can induce sleep through creative visualization exercises or progressive muscle relaxation. A technique developed at the beginning of the century, but that still works very well. Imagining a blue light that pervades our body, gently, from the feet up, first one then the other, then one leg then the other, and up, the abdomen and the chest, then the arms, first one and then the other, then the shoulders, the neck, the forehead … In this way, a feeling of profound well-being is achieved.
Another very important thing is to use the bed only to sleep or at least to read two pages of a good book before falling asleep. No eating or anything, like watching TV in the room. The room environment must be well ventilated, the atmosphere soft, with soft colors and light curtains that let the light of the morning pass. Naturally, mattress and cushions must be comfortable, otherwise they must be changed and chosen with care.
Which foods to choose before going to sleep
Attention also to how and what you eat in the evening. A light dinner, eaten early enough, by 9pm would be ideal. Prefer whole grains (especially whole wheat and oats, to banish refined ones that instead cause insomnia) and lean proteins, accompanied by stewed vegetables (better vegetables with green leaves such as spinach and lettuce), or a cream or vegetable minestrone season.
Avoid eating and red meat and cheese (except for the ricotta which is good) for dinner, as it is difficult to digest, while preferring white meat or better still fish, preferably blue. To season the dishes use extra-virgin olive oil raw, maximum one or two soup spoons.
Then there are foods that promote sleep, which are foods rich in tryptophan emagnesium. Like almonds, bananas and persimmons. While walnuts contain melatonin which improves sleep-wake rhythm. Chestnuts and dates also help to make people fall asleep. As well as pumpkin, cherries and kiwis. No alcohol, no coffee, no chocolate and no energizing drinks. If after dinner (at least an hour later) take the “good night tea”, sweeten it with honey, which also helps sleep.
