Lo zaffiro è una gemma preziosa che può presentare diverse colorazioni passando dal blu al nero, dal verde al rosa, dal marrone al giallo. Tuttavia lo zaffiro più famoso è quello di colore blu, associato simbolicamente alla fortuna e alla virtù, ma anche al pianeta Saturno.
Nell’antica Grecia lo zaffiro era invece associato ad Apollo e si riteneva che fosse in grado di potenziare il terzo occhio, motivo per cui era una pietra molto utilizzata da chi consultava gli oracoli a scopo divinatorio.
Re e regine lo prediligevano perché oltre a essere un simbolo di regalità, deteneva la capacità di proteggere dall’invidia e dall’infedeltà. Inoltre gli si attribuiva il potere di portare armonia tra gli amanti e la pace tra gli avversari. In passato era diffusa inoltre la convinzione che fosse un ottimo antidoto contro il veleno e che aiutasse ad annullarne gli effetti nocivi, favorendo la guarigione.
Veniva anche utilizzato per creare dei talismani in grado di guidare e proteggere da malattie e cattivi presagi i viaggiatori.
Lo zaffiro blu, per via del suo colore, è anche associato ai Cieli e in alcune culture è conosciuto con il soprannome di “pietra divina”.
Nel cristianesimo è considerato la pietra della purezza, della saggezza e della castità.
In cristalloterapia la gemma è consigliata per favorire la pace interiore, donare affidabilità e obiettività, rinforzare a livello fisico il sistema nervoso. Le modalità di utilizzo prevedono che venga indossato sotto forma di ciondolo o bracciale, oppure che venga portato con sé in tasca o in un sacchetto di cotone.
